Why rack footprint is not room size
Eight 2×3-foot racks occupy 48 square feet on paper. The real room needs space around them, a path from the door, working clearance, and room for environmental equipment or a table. That is what the allowance fields are designed to expose.
Before you lock the room size
| Check | Why |
|---|---|
| Door swing and egress | A layout should not depend on blocking a door or required access path. |
| HVAC / dehumidification clearance | Equipment may have manufacturer-required service and airflow clearances. |
| Electrical panels | Maintain required access and clearance. |
| Loaded cart path | Measure the widest cart/rack, not just a person walking sideways. |
| Cleaning access | A rack that technically fits but cannot be moved or cleaned around is not a good fit. |
Frequently asked questions
Does this calculate HVAC or dehumidifier size?
No. It estimates floor-space planning for racks/working clearance. Environmental equipment sizing should follow manufacturer guidance and, for larger installations, qualified HVAC/environmental-design input.
Why is an aisle factor included?
Racks cannot occupy 100% of the room. People, carts, doors and equipment need working clearance.
Can I use this for hanging instead of racks?
You can use it as a rough floor-space planner if you enter the footprint of your hanging modules, but hanging layouts may need different clearances.
